Gogo's Plate Event

Gogo's Plate is a pop-up plant-forward food experience based on what a sustainable African plate of the future should look like. This food experience is designed to inspire change and education about healthy and delicious heritage foods. The food experience tells the story of an indigenous food system that is healthy and sustainable through the eyes of Gogo and her plate. Gogo’s plate is the food that Gogo prepared for healing, love, comfort, connection, and enjoyment. This experience tells the story of my two grannies, Koko Makosha and Gogo Gertrude, and their kitchens, where they created delicious and nutritious food for their families. Koko Makosha was a subsistence farmer who grew and preserved all her food, and Gogo Gertrude grew up on a farm but ended up as a cook at a hotel, which exposed her to different flavors and cultures. Both my granny’s food experiences bring with them lessons on how to be sustainable, healthy, and thriving within a local food system. Through this platform, Chef Mokgadi champions and highlights local organic urban farmers that are dedicated to lovingly growing the produce she uses to create her dishes. This food experience is plant-forward with 80% of the food on the plate being plant-based, with 10% dairy and 10% sustainable meat products. This food experience opens diners to new ways of enjoying African plants, healing herbs, and grains. The food is always served and presented family-style in order to facilitate the African spirit of meal sharing and conversation around the meal, fostering a real sense of presence and authentic connection with the ingredients, Gogo's story, and each other.
